Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Financial literacy is a critical skill that empowers individuals to make informed financial decisions and manage their personal finances effectively. In Dala Local Government Area (LGA), Kano State, indigenous language radio programs have the potential to reach a large portion of the population and promote financial literacy. This study explores the role of indigenous language radio in promoting financial literacy in Dala LGA, focusing on how radio programs in local languages can improve financial knowledge and decision-making among the community.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Many people in Dala LGA lack the necessary financial knowledge to manage their finances effectively, which contributes to poor economic outcomes. While financial literacy programs exist, there is limited research on the role of indigenous language radio in promoting financial literacy. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of indigenous language radio in improving financial literacy in Dala LGA.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the role of indigenous language radio in promoting financial literacy in Dala LGA.

2. To evaluate the effectiveness of indigenous language radio programs in improving financial knowledge and decision-making.

3. To identify the challenges and opportunities in using indigenous language radio to promote financial literacy in Dala LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

1. How effective has indigenous language radio been in promoting financial literacy in Dala LGA?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

1. Indigenous language radio has significantly contributed to promoting financial literacy in Dala LGA.

2. Indigenous language radio programs have led to improved financial knowledge and decision-making in Dala LGA.

3. There are significant challenges in using indigenous language radio to promote financial literacy in Dala LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will provide valuable insights into the role of indigenous language radio in promoting financial literacy, offering recommendations for more effective financial education programs in Dala LGA. The findings will be useful for financial institutions, media organizations, and community leaders.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study is limited to Dala LGA and focuses on the role of indigenous language radio in promoting financial literacy. It does not cover other forms of media or regions outside the study area.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

1. Financial Literacy: The ability to understand and manage financial matters, including budgeting, saving, investing, and debt management.

2. Indigenous Language Radio: Radio programs broadcast in local languages that serve specific communities, focusing on issues of local interest and development.

3. Financial Knowledge: Understanding financial concepts and principles, such as budgeting, saving, and investing, that help individuals make informed financial decisions.
